Fur Cleaning and Conditioning
Your Fur coat, like an automobile, needs service if it is to be kept soft and lovely and new looking. Have Sir Charles Furriers inspect it occasionally and make their recommendations. We will advise you how often it should be conditioned, cleaned, and glazed, based upon the nature of the Fur and how much wear you have given it.
As a rule a Fur garment will need to be conditioned every other year and cleaning about once a year. The Fur garment should also be glazed at the same time, preferably when placed or mailed into our cold storage.
Insist that your Furs be conditioned and cleaned by only the safe Furrier’s Method of pelt massage and manipulation of the Fur hairs, for this is the only, complete and safe way to clean your valuable Furs.
Fur crocking is oxidation of the dye used on a Fur, causing the dye to discolor or come off. Occasionally this occurs in new Furs as well as in other wearing apparel, and Sir Charles Furriers can remedy this for you. What you believe to be crocking is often merely an accumulation of dust or cosmetics; therefore, having the Fur conditioned and cleaned will thoroughly remove this.
Conditioning - most Fur troubles arise from improper care of the skin of the Fur. The skin, often called the leather, undergoes a highly technical process which is designed to preserve the pelt and its oil content. The oil content of the skin determines both the life of a Fur and its appearance as well. If the oil from the leather is lost, the Fur will become brittle, dull, and lusterless. To ensure a longer life for the leather, it will be necessary to replenish this oil.
This oil content gives the skin both pliability and elasticity and preserves and adds to the strength of the leather. Under the right conditions these oils remain in the skin for many years, but if the Fur is abused they may be drained from the skin, thus causing the leather to become hard and brittle, and the Fur itself to become dull and almost valueless.
