Decide on the Fur you would like. Take notice of the difference in quality and price; in other words, watch for quality and not the price. Ask questions about the kind of skin used, the part of the world the skin came from, and whether whole skins or scraps have been used.

Examine the Fur carefully. Look for sleeves that have been shortened or narrowed too much. Examine the quality of the Fur beneath the cuffs, under the collar, under the lapels. Inferior skins or skins of different animal are often used in such places.

Check the lining of the coat. Ask the dealer to open the lining so that you can examine the backs of the skins. Generally, the Fur name of the skin is stamped on the back of the leather. Check the number of seams against the size of the full Fur of the animal. Many small seams may indicate that Fur scraps have been used instead of whole skins. Scraps are fine unless sold as whole….big price difference. Feel the leather.

When you decide on your coat, tell the Furrier that you wish a written guarantee stating the correct name of the skins used, the name of the animal, the geographical area from which it came, and whether the Fur has been blended or dyed. Request also that the guarantee cover replacement of defective skins and repairs of rips for at least a year after date of purchase.
