The Care of Skins

The care of the skins:

Most Fur troubles arise from improper care of the skin of the Fur. The skin, often called the leather, undergoes a highly technical process which is designed to preserve the pelt and its oil content. The oil content of the skin determines both the life of a Fur and its appearance as well. If the oil from the leather is lost, the Fur will become brittle, dull, and lusterless. To ensure a longer life for the leather, it will be necessary to replenish this oil.

This oil content gives the skin both pliability and elasticity and preserves and adds to the strength of the leather. Under the right conditions these oils remain in the skin for many years, but if the Fur is abused they may be drained from the skin, thus causing the leather to become hard and brittle, and the Fur itself to become dull and almost valueless. To avoid this be sure to adhere to the following:

  1. Never place wet or damp Furs near a stove, radiator, vent or heat register. Just shake them gently and place on a Fur hanger where they can slowly dry at ordinary room temperature. The Fur hanger should be contiguously wide to conform and maintain the shaping of the neck and shoulders. If your Fur garment is saturated send it to Sir Charles as soon as possible +/or while still wet or damp. The Fur skins could shrink out of their designed shape and mildew could ruin your Fur garment. Same for a beverage or food spill onto your Fur garment. Wetness is manageable with a Fur coat; but too much saturation requires special attention in that the outside hairs could dry but the inside skins remain damp growing mildew and ruining your Fur. Never use a hair dryer to dry your Fur garment. Heat is the number one enemy oils of skins, and cause malformation of your Fur garment.
  2. Insist that your Furs be conditioned and cleaned by only the safe Furrier’s Method with pelt massage and manipulation of the Fur hairs; this is the only completely safe way to clean your valuable Furs.
  3. If possible, do not hang Furs in a closet jammed with other garments. If this cannot be avoided, place a bowl of water in the closet to keep the air from being too dry. Do not hang Furs in a closet with steam pipes. Heat is too dry for Furs and will bake them, draining the oil from the skin and shortening the life of the garment.
  4. In time the skin of the Fur may commence to stiffen. When you first notice this, send the garment to Sir Charles Furriers. We can bring the Fur back to its former condition by reoiling.
  5. Burns require special attention to restore the Fur. Bring or mail us your Fur garment and we will repair the Fur area before it can becomes the weak link that rips and tear into healthier Fur areas. Same with make-up and perfume discoloration.
